Select Accomplishments of Big Horn Health Services:

  1. Enhanced Nursing Coverage: Transitioned from part-time nursing to full-time staff at Big Horn Health Services, including one full-time Registered Nurse, two full-time Licensed Practical Nurses, and a Nurse Practitioner in clinic once per week.
  2. Indoor Fitness Center: Opened in October 2023 to promote strength and physical health through exercise programs.
  3. Community Infrastructure: Invested in infrastructure projects like the fibre optics development, water lines, and wastewater systems, along with community gardens, outdoor rinks, and a fire hall.
  4. First Nations Client Liaison (FNCL) Program: Reestablished in June 2024 to support individuals in navigating the healthcare system, ensuring comprehensive and culturally sensitive care.
  5. Development Projects: Advocated for and supported the future development of community facilities, including the new Health Centre and Head Start building, as well as the renovation of the band office.
  6. Good Food Program: Launched in 2018, this program expanded by approximately 200%, adding refrigeration in 2021 and increasing the variety of items in each box from 4 to about 8.
  7. Growth of Staff: Expanded from 4 to over 30 staff members since the establishment of Big Horn Health Services.
  8. Cultural Programs: Introduced and supported programs such as cultural camps, tipi making, and drum making.
  9. Increased Medical Transport: Expanded transportation services for community members, removing barriers for healthcare accessed off- reserve
  10. 50+ Club: Established in June 2024, this group met every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Big Horn Band Office to foster community connections among members aged 50 and older.
  11. Allied Health Services: Brought in allied health professionals (occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, physiotherapy, social work, and nutrition services) to improve access to services and reduce the need for travel off-reserve.
  12. Diverse Services and Training: Expanded training programs, including driving and gun safety classes, and diverse health services to meet the community’s needs, enhancing accessibility and support.
  13. Dental Health Investment: Made significant investments in dental and oral health equipment to support on-reserve services.
  14. Mental Wellness Programming: Continued investment in mental health and addiction support programs.
  15. COVID-19 Pandemic Response (2020-Present):
    – Partnered with Stoney Tribal Administration and regional agencies to implement safety measures.
    – Distributed care packages with food and hygiene items.
    – Provided on-demand testing (drive-thru or in-home) and administered vaccines onsite and through mobile clinics.
  16. Strengthened Collaboration and Communication: Enhanced partnerships with schools, health staff, and community organizations to promote effective communication and teamwork while establishing clear goals for community initiatives.
  17. Youth and Family Support: Enhanced programs for youth, such as summer kids’ camps with trail rides and hockey equipment donations, supported by the Renfrew Team and other healthcare staff, while creating opportunities for family involvement.
  18. Housing and Accommodation: Addressed housing needs through the construction of new homes and converting isolation trailers into staff accommodation.
